Kaili and Geoff’s story started at their old karate school in Southern California. They both took a break for a while, but when they reconnected, Kaili finally admitted she had always had a crush on him. After that, they started spending more time together – and the rest is history.
A little over a year into dating, Geoff was relocated to Oregon for work. Kaili made the leap with him, and they moved in together as they began building their life in a brand new state. Since then, he has supported her through work and school, and they have truly grown into this next chapter side by side.
From the second we met for their engagement session, we never stopped laughing. We were constantly talking, joking, and yapping the entire time. Having a genuine connection with my couples is so important to me, and engagement sessions are kind of a double win – you get beautiful photos, and we all get to know each other before spending 6-8 hours together on your wedding day.
Kaili and Geoff had already done engagement photos at the coast, so this time we wanted something different – something that felt iconic to their new home together.
Since they are not originally from Oregon, choosing the Columbia River Gorge felt meaningful. It is such a stunning and uniquely Oregon backdrop, and I loved incorporating a landscape that represents this chapter of their lives.
It was a cloudy January afternoon, and we started with heavy low clouds rolling through the Gorge. As the session went on, the clouds lifted just enough to reveal those sweeping views. The mood felt soft, romantic, and dramatic all at once – peak winter in the Gorge energy.
We started at Vista House at Crown Point, arriving early enough to sneak inside for a few photos with the stained glass and historic details. Even just the exterior architecture is stunning. The curved stone, dramatic staircases, and panoramic Gorge views make it feel incredibly romantic.
From there, we meandered down the road to the Portland Women’s Forum Viewpoint, which offers one of the most iconic views of Vista House perched above the Gorge.
There truly is no place like the Columbia River Gorge. Within a short drive, you have waterfalls, forest trails, open cliffs, and river views. It is one of the most versatile engagement session locations near Portland.
These spots offer dramatic cliffside views, architectural romance, open skies, sweeping landscapes, and intimate quieter corners, especially at Women’s Forum.
Spring and summer are especially beautiful with wildflowers, but honestly, the Gorge works year round.
Lighting wise, both locations are open and exposed. Midday can be bright and direct, but cloudy afternoons like we had or golden hour evenings are absolute magic.
Kaili and Geoff wanted something playful and lighthearted – not overly posed or serious.
They had done a more dressed up engagement session in the past, so this time they leaned casual. Geoff considered wearing a button up jersey from his favorite band, which I loved for personality, and Kaili wore a short white dress. The combination felt effortless and true to them.
Their outfits worked beautifully with the setting – soft white against moody cliffs, casual textures against dramatic scenery. It did not need to be perfectly matched to feel cohesive.
My approach is always prompt based rather than stiff posing. I will often ask someone to talk in a silly voice or do something unexpected just to shake off nerves. At Vista House, I asked Geoff to give me his best Cookie Monster voice, and it had both Kaili and me cracking up instantly.
We got her must have ring shots, like her hand on his chest and the over the shoulder carry with the ring toward camera, but the rest of the session flowed naturally. Their love genuinely radiated off of them.
One of my favorite playful moments was their mock fight pose. Since they both do karate and love watching UFC and MMA, we staged a fake sparring moment. Kaili pretended to headbutt Geoff, and I caught it mid laugh. It was perfect.
A quieter moment I loved was Geoff gently playing with Kaili’s hair while they sat together on a blanket overlooking the Gorge. Simple. Intimate. Easy.
One standout image for me was a beautifully simple frame of them walking down the Vista House stairs with the Gorge stretching out behind them. It did not need anything extra – just them and that view.
What made their connection feel so genuine was how effortless it all felt. They did not overthink anything. They were not trying to be perfect. They were just themselves – laughing, teasing, and enjoying the moment together.
If you are considering the Gorge for your engagement photos, here is what to know:
Best Season:
Any season works. Spring and summer bring wildflowers and greenery, while fall and winter offer moodier skies and fewer crowds.
Best Time of Day:
Sunrise or sunset for the best light and to avoid crowds, especially on weekends.
Parking Notes:
Parking at Vista House can fill up quickly during nice weather or peak tourist season. Plan to arrive early if possible.
Things to Consider:
It can be windy due to the elevation. Certain viewpoints can also get crowded in the summer months.
Engagement sessions are about more than just pretty photos.
They allow us to build comfort before the wedding day. You get to see how I guide you, how I prompt you, and how relaxed the experience can feel. I learn what angles you love, what feels natural, and how you interact together.
They also help your wedding day flow more smoothly because you already know what to expect.
Your photos can be used for save the dates, wedding websites, guest books, prints, and decor.
Most importantly, they give you a chance to pause and celebrate this season before everything shifts into full wedding mode.
If you are planning a wedding in Portland or the Columbia River Gorge and want engagement photos that feel playful, warm, and true to color, I would love to photograph this season for you.
