If you’re looking for an Oregon engagement session location with wide open fields, warm golden light, and a laid-back feel, Champoeg State Park is such a good option.
Madison + Brett wanted something a little more western-inspired that felt true to their relationship. Brett grew up on a farm on Sauvie Island, and their wedding is taking place at a farm owned by a family friend where Madison also has ties. Choosing a location with that rustic, country feel just made sense for them.
Even in January, the landscape here is stunning. I actually had my own family photos taken here a couple of years ago in the fall, so if you’re someone who loves warm, golden tones and natural scenery, Champoeg State Park engagement photos are definitely worth considering.
Their whole session had such a relaxed, playful energy from start to finish.

We started near the visitor center, where there’s a working garden and a gorgeous red barn. There’s also a small apple orchard nearby. Since it was January, the trees were bare, but it was still such a beautiful area for photos, especially along the fence line.
Because the backdrop was a little more simple this time of year, I leaned heavily into movement-based prompts to bring the gallery to life. We did lots of walking, bumping hips, a few spins, and even a little dancing.
I also gave them more candid prompts to capture the way they naturally interact with each other. Madison told me beforehand that they were both awkward in front of the camera, but I think these photos prove that once they loosened up, they were total naturals.
Closer to sunset, we got the most beautiful golden hour light near the main road. The sun was dropping behind the trees, and it felt so dreamy. It was the perfect way to end their Champoeg engagement session.
If you’re looking for engagement photo locations near Portland, Champoeg State Park is perfect for couples wanting a rustic, outdoorsy vibe without needing to head deep into the forest.
There are open fields, tree-lined areas, barns, fences, and plenty of natural variety all in one location. That means you can get multiple looks during one session and even change outfits between spots if you’d like.
Because of how open the park is, this is also an ideal location for golden hour sessions when the light is soft and glowy.
It’s also a great option for couples who want a little more privacy and space to relax during photos. We were the only people near the visitor center during this session. Just keep in mind that the visitor center gate does close and lock in the evening, so sessions need to wrap before then.
If you’re dreaming of natural, outdoorsy engagement photos with warm light and room to breathe, Champoeg State Park is such a beautiful choice.
