If you’re searching for a Willamette Valley wedding venue that feels like you left Oregon without actually leaving, Black Walnut Inn in Dundee should be at the top of your list. I visited recently as part of a styled shoot, and the property made an immediate impression. As a Willamette Valley wedding photographer, I don’t say this lightly – this place is special.
From the moment you pull up the lavender-lined drive and see the inn framed through the archway, the whole property just works. Stucco walls, blue-gray shutters, vineyard views, a fountain courtyard, and that unmistakable Willamette Valley hillside stretching out in every direction. It’s about an hour from Portland, but it feels like a completely different world once you’re there.
What Makes Black Walnut Inn a Great Wedding Venue
Some venues need a lot of work to feel special. This isn’t one of them.
Black Walnut Inn already has so much going for it visually – the architecture, the grounds, the views. You can keep your décor simple and let the venue do the heavy lifting, or go all out on the details and have the most gorgeous backdrop for all of it. Either way, the foundation is already there.
As a result, it’s a great fit for couples who want that European wine country feel without leaving Oregon, and who want a wedding day that feels intimate and unhurried rather than big and busy.
The Courtyard
The courtyard is one of the best spots on the property. For example, there’s a stone fountain in the center, the inn wraps around you on one side, and the valley opens up behind you on the other. We shot portraits here, and it was genuinely one of my favorite spots of the whole day. In fact, you can point your camera in basically any direction and get something beautiful.
The East Patio
The east patio is where a tablescape really comes to life. A wood pergola with string lights sits overhead, and the stucco walls and blue shutters on either side frame everything perfectly. During the styled shoot, the table was set with a deep green velvet runner, candles, and stunning florals from Frolic Florals. The result was elegant without being overdone, and the space made every detail look intentional.
The East Lawn Ceremony Space
The ceremony setup on the east lawn was simple – florals only, no arch – and it didn’t need anything else. You’re standing on an open grassy hillside with lavender on either side and the Willamette Valley rolled out behind you. Essentially, the view handles the backdrop – everything else is just details. Overall, this spot is beautiful without needing to add much more than than the view.
The Lobby
We ducked inside the lobby for a few portraits, and I’m really glad we did. A grand piano sits near the French doors, and the light coming through the windows was soft and beautiful. Overall it’s a quieter, more intimate space compared to everything outside – the kind of spot that gives your gallery some variety and makes the day feel more complete. So if indoor portraits matter to you, this is worth carving out time for.
The Four Graces Event Space
Up the hill from the inn is The Four Graces winery, which is part of the same property and serves as a newer event space. The inside is completely different from the inn. Vaulted wood ceilings, exposed beams, polished concrete floors, tall windows, and a really cool windmill piece on the wall. It’s warm and modern at the same time, and that combination photographs really well. So if you want something with more capacity or a slightly different aesthetic than the patio, this is worth a serious look.
Photography at Black Walnut Inn
From a photography standpoint, this property offers a lot of variety without ever leaving the grounds. That means more time enjoying your day and less time driving somewhere for portraits.
The courtyard and fountain area are perfect right after the ceremony, when everyone’s still in that happy emotional headspace. Meanwhile, the east lawn and lavender-lined exterior work beautifully for bridal party photos and relaxed couple portraits. If you slip away during cocktail hour, the vineyard views are stunning – especially as golden hour kicks in. Additionally, the lobby gives you a beautiful indoor option if weather shifts or you just want a change of scenery mid-day.
The day I visited was bright and sunny, and the natural textures of the property – stone, stucco, greenery, wood – kept everything from feeling harsh. The palette here is warm and muted, which makes editing feel effortless. Overall, this is the kind of venue where the day unfolds naturally and the photos reflect that. I’d genuinely love to photograph a real wedding here.
