Why Hire a Film Photographer in Oregon?

As a film photographer in Oregon, I love to shoot both digital and film. I offer 2-3 rolls of film as an add-on for my wedding packages, and film by-the-roll for portrait sessions. Here’s why it’s worth considering.
1. Film has a quality that editing can’t replicate
You can get close with presets. But close isn’t the same thing.
What makes film look the way it does comes down to chemistry – a physical process creates the grain, tonal range, and color rendering that digital sensors don’t replicate. I use a Canon EOS 3 35mm camera imported from Japan with a Sigma 35mm Art Lens. When I send a roll off to the lab and get the scans back, there’s a depth and texture that my digital files don’t have on their own. You can see the difference when you compare them side by side.
Once I shoot a roll, I send it off to Photovision in Salem, Oregon for processing and scanning. Using a local lab means I’m working with people who know me and my work – and the turnaround and scan quality are consistently excellent. Supporting a local Oregon business is a bonus.
2. Film slows everything down in the best way
Adding film to my kit has changed the way I shoot.
With my mirrorless camera, I can capture 40 frames per second – perfect for the dance floor, cake cutting, and moments where I can’t afford to miss anything. But when there’s time to slow down – portraits, details, quiet in-between moments – film is the perfect addition.
Each roll only has 36 frames, and often you only have one shot at getting it right. Instead of shooting wide and thinking “I’ll crop that later,” I take more time to frame things carefully. The result is frames that feel considered rather than captured.
3. The colors are genuinely different – in a good way
The specific film I use – Kodak Portra – is a professional-grade 35mm film that captures skin tones and natural light in a way that digital cameras can’t easily emulate. Portra is forgiving, warm, and flattering across a range of lighting conditions.
Oregon’s light photographs beautifully on film. My editing style is warm and true-to-color, which was inspired by the way film looks. When you add actual film to your session, you’re getting the real thing instead of a digital approximation of it.
4. Film photos become heirlooms
One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was sift through the big box of physical prints my parents had collected over the years. Photos of them as a young couple. My brother and me as babies. My grandparents. Those prints felt permanent in a way that a phone gallery just doesn’t.
Not many people are having their photos printed anymore – which means a lot of images live on a hard drive and never get seen again. When you add film to your wedding package or portrait session, you get the digital scans and also have the option to receive 4×6 prints. There’s something about having a physical print in your hands that makes a photo feel like it actually happened.
5. Working with a Film Photographer in Oregon Is More Accessible Than You Think
Film doesn’t mean an entirely film-based session. As a hybrid photographer, I shoot primarily digital so you still get full coverage and a complete gallery. Film is layered on top of that, not instead of it.
For weddings, I offer 2-3 rolls as an add-on to any package – typically used during portraits, getting-ready moments, and ceremony details. For portrait sessions, I offer film by-the-roll so you can add one roll to a session without committing to a full film experience.
