One of my favorite parts of planning an engagement session is helping couples find a location that actually feels like them. Portland is surrounded by so many different landscapes, you can have a session in a lush green forest, on a windswept beach, at a stunning estate garden, or on a mountain all within a few hours of each other. Here are some of my favorites.

Right inside the city, Hoyt gives you towering trees, winding paths, and a totally different feel depending on the season. In spring the flowering trees are stunning. In fall it’s all warm golds and reds. This is a great option if you want a lush, forested feel without driving far. It’s also a popular spot so weekday or early morning sessions work best to avoid crowds.

Jenkins Estate has this beautiful old-estate feel with manicured gardens, open fields, and gorgeous light. The rose garden in summer is incredible. It’s tucked away in Beaverton and feels a million miles from the city. If you want something romantic and a little more elevated, this is a top pick.

Yes, it’s a drive, but it’s worth it. Haystack Rock is iconic for a reason, and the Oregon coast has this moody, dramatic quality that photographs beautifully at any time of year. Sunset on the beach is golden hour at its absolute best. If you’re the kind of couple who loves the ocean, this is your spot. Want to see what a Cannon Beach session actually looks like? The mountain is a backdrop that never gets old. Whether you want a meadow covered in wildflowers, a dense forest trail, or an open view of the peak itself, Mt. Hood National Forest has it. Summer and early fall are the best times before the snow makes access tricky, and the light up there at golden hour is something else. Want to see what a Mt. Hood session looks like in the snow? This one is a bit of a hidden gem. Champoeg has open meadows along the Willamette River, tall trees, and a laid-back, natural feel. It’s less crowded than a lot of Portland-area parks, which makes it great for a relaxed session. Beautiful in spring when things are green and also stunning in late fall. An underrated spot out in Beaverton with open hillside views, tall grass, and oak woodland. This is the kind of location that has a really organic, editorial feel to it. It’s especially stunning in late spring and summer when everything is golden and the views open up.

The Gorge is one of those places that looks incredible no matter when you go. Waterfalls, dramatic basalt cliffs, sweeping river views, and epic open skies. There are endless trail options depending on how adventurous you want to get. This is perfect for outdoorsy couples who want their photos to feel a little epic. The best location is the one that actually feels like you. Think about where you spend time together, what kind of scenery you’re drawn to, and what vibe you want for your photos. I’ll always give you my honest opinion on what will work best for your session and time of year.
Some of these locations require permits for commercial photography, so make sure you book with a photographer who knows how to handle that (hint: I do). And when you book with Rain & Reverie, you’ll receive my location guide with even more spots to explore across Oregon.
